26/07/2019 What to Expect at Your First Dance Fit Class

You’ve made the decision to get fitter and have plucked up the courage to try something new. You’ve booked a place at a Dance Fit class, you’ve got your trainers on and you’re armed with a bottle of water. You walk in the door and pay the instructor, now what?!

A Dance Fit class follows a traditional aerobics class format –

– Warm up

– Copy me as we do different dance-inspired exercise routines to music

– Cool down

Rather than some classes where the music plays continuously, I have set routines to different songs and I usually give a mini-demo of the moves before each one. We have a quick stop after each routine for a sip of water.

The routines are a mix of exercise moves and dance moves and I try to make them as easy to follow as I can! For any harder moves I will always offer easier alternatives. It’s one big game of follow the leader with all eyes on me!

I think the reason people want to come to Dance Fit is that it looks like fun (they aren’t wrong!) However, no matter how much you like the idea of something, the thought of doing it for the first time can be daunting, especially if it involves exercise! Even if you are going to a class with a friend (a little less scary) the fears are still the same.

“I haven’t done any exercise in ages; I’m probably going to die after the warm up!”

You might get sweaty, out of breath and discover muscles you haven’t used before but you will definitely come out alive!

Naturally it will feel hard at first if you haven’t exercised in a while but don’t let this panic you or put you off! You will get better and it will get easier.

Of course, it will never get TOO easy. I always say if it doesn’t challenge you then it doesn’t change you! I work hard to make sure I introduce a few new routines with new moves every month to ensure my classes don’t plateau or get boring!

“I can’t dance, I’ve got 2 left feet! I bet I’m going to be rubbish!”

The ‘dance’ element of Dance Fit tends to be the thing that worries people the most. However, I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I’ve actually met someone who didn’t have any natural rhythm at all!

The thing I hear most of my class members say is, “I can do my arms and my legs just not at the same time!”

The most common thing you will hear me say? “It doesn’t matter which way you go or if you go wrong so long as you keep moving!”

“I won’t know what I’m doing and everyone will laugh at me!”

Dancing is one of the best all-over body workouts you can do. Not only is dance effective, the dance part of Dance Fit is the fun part! To put it simply it’s meant to be a laugh; we’re not training for a performance! Will the class laugh at you? No! Will they laugh at themselves and with each other? Yes! As I’ve said already, all eyes are on me so no one will be looking at you.

“I bet everyone else is young, slim and fit and I’ll stick out like a sore thumb!”

Rather than being the ‘odd one out,’ you are likely to find yourself right at home with the other class goers. There is not a certain size, shape, age or fitness level that defines my class members. Everyone who comes is different. What we do all share is common ground. We are all exercising for similar reasons and we all have similar struggles.

I hope this has quashed any worries and given you a better idea of what a Dance Fit class is like. The only thing left to say is why not try it for yourself? The majority of people who do try it end up loving it. You can view my timetable here. What are you waiting for?
